LANDMARKS IN THE HISTORY OF JAPAN-BHUTAN RELATIONS
 
1964   Agricultural specialist Keiji Nishioka arrives in Bhutan under Colombo Plan
(He introduced new farming techniques and worked for the development of Agriculture for 28 years. Recognizing his outstanding contribution, he was conferred the title of "Dasho" in 1980)
 
1981   First Japanese Grant Aid to Bhutan
 
1986   Establishment of Diplomatic Relations
 
1987   H.I.H. Prince Naruhito visits Bhutan
 
1988   Establishment of JOCV Coordination Office in Bhutan
(Its name has been changed to JICA/JOCV Bhutan Office and renamed as JICA Bhutan Office in 2001. It coordinates Grant Aid, Technical Cooperation Projects, Technical Training Programs, Japan-Southwest Asia Youth Friendship Program, etc.)

Appointment of Mr Hajime Onishi as First Honorary Consul of Bhutan

First Japanese Volunteer arrives in Bhutan
(Since then over 300 volunteers have come to Bhutan)

(Since then, the Festival has been held in different cities of Bhutan like Trashigang, Bumthang, Mongar, Punakha, Wangdue Phodrang, Haa, Kuruthang, Paro besides Thimphu. The Twelfth edition of Festival will be held this year)
 
2001   First JOCV Senior Volunteer arrives in Bhutan
(Since then over 100 volunteers have come to Bhutan)
 
2005   Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs Katsuyuki Kawai visits Bhutan
 
2006   Celebrations of 20th Anniversary of establishment of Japan-Bhutan Diplomatic Relations
(On this occasion, Japan-Bhutan Parliamentary Friendship League visited Bhutan. Events like Japanese Archery Demonstration, Korei Hogaku Kai Music performance, Exhibition of Photographs by Hiroshi Moritani, Exhibition of Photographs by JICA Bhutan Office, Japanese Film Festival were also held)
