Japanese Government to hand over Two Bridges on the National Highway No.5 to the Royal Government of Bhutan through “the Project for Reconstruction of Bridges (Phase III)"


1. The Government of Japan will hand over two bridges (Lawakha and Basochu) to the Royal Government of Bhutan through “the Project for Reconstruction of Bridges (Phase III)" totaling 2 billion 496 million Yen grant assistance. H. E. Mr. Akitaka Saiki, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Bhutan, will attend the handing over ceremony of the project in Wangdu Phodrang, on 24 June 2011.

2. The Government of Japan has supported Bhutan’s efforts to reconstruct bridges on main roads under the Project for Reconstruction of Bridges Phase I (five bridges) and Phase II (three bridges). Under the Phase III, six bridges on the National Highway No.5 have been reconstructed, and two of them (Lawakha and Basochu) were completed.

3. The Government of Japan hopes that this grant assistance would contribute to an efficient and safe road network, and help in the balanced infrastructure development in Bhutan, as envisaged in the 10th Five Year Plan, as well as contribute to further strengthening of the friendly relationship between Japan and Bhutan.
