Applicants with a functional command of the Japanese language can apply for CIRs, assisting local government offices in international exchange activities at the local level. Just under 10% of JET participants are CIRs and major duties often include translation/interpretation for government officials, teaching community or school English classes, and international exchange event planning and implementation.

Duties for a CIR may include:

  • Receiving guests from abroad
  • Editing and producing pamphlets in English or Japanese
  • Advising and planning international exchange programmes
  • Teaching English (or other languages) to government employees and local residents
 
 

General Conditions

(1) Remuneration
– Participants receive a remuneration of approximately 4.02 million yen (approx. 22.8 lakh) for their first year of appointment. Remuneration increases with subsequent appointments.
 
(2)Period of Participation
– In principle, participation is for a one-year period starting from the day after arrival in Japan and may extend up to 3 years or in exceptional cases to a total of 5 years.
 
(3) Work Hours
– 35 hours per week, standard ( Monday to Friday)
 
(4) Holidays
– Saturday, Sunday, Japanese national holidays, paid leave (at least 10 days)*
* Due to work circumstances, participants may be asked to work during weekends and national holidays.
 

 


 

Positions in 2026

In 2026, one person will be recruited for each of the following four positions.

Position (i)
Placement: Hidaka Town Hall, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan
Duties: Interacting with residents and supporting Indian residents in the town.
Requirements:
   (1) Must have a functional command of English and Hindi language.
  (2) Japanese language proficiency N1.
  (3) It is prefferable to be a resident or native of state of Rajasthan or Bihar.
 (4) Must have a driving licence. 
Position (ii)
Placement: Toyama Prefectural Government
Duties: Translation, interpretation and work related to the promotion of exchange between Toyama Prefecture and state of Andhra Pradesh.
Requirements:
   (1) Japanese language proficiency N2 or above.
  (2) It is prefferable to be a resident or native of state of Andhra Pradesh.
 (3) Must have a functional command of English and Telugu language.
 
Position (iii)
Placement: Hamamatsu City Hall, Shizuoka Prefecture
Duties: Translation, interpretation and work related to the promotion of exchange between Hamamatsu City and Ahmedabad.
Requirements:
   (1) Japanese language proficiency N1.
  (2) Must have a functional command of English.

Position (iv)
Placement: Matsue City Hall, Shimane Prefecture
Duties: Dispatching and receiving economic exchange delegations, organising seminars, and coordinating with universities, companies, and other entities to develop economic exchanges with the State of Kerala
Requirements:
  (1) It is preferable to be a resident or native of state of Kerala.
  (2) Japanese language proficiency N1.
 (3) Must have a functional command of English.
 
As there is a possibility of being employed in positions other than those listed above, people with Japanese language skills, regardless of their home state, are encouraged to apply!

Eligibility

Applicants must:
・Hold an Indian passport.
・Hold a Bachelor’s degree in any subject by July 2026.
・Have a functional command of Japanese (Japanese Language Proficiency Test “N2” or NAT level 3 is a must).
・Be both mentally and physically healthy.
・Have a keen interest in Japan and be willing to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of Japan after arrival.
・Can adapt to living and working conditions that could be significantly different from those previously experienced by the applicant.
・Not have lived in Japan for six or more years in total since 2016.
・Not have participated in the JET Programme since the 2022 JET Programme  or for more than six years in total.
・Not have declined, without justifiable reason, a position on the JET Programme after receiving notification of placement in the previous JET Programme year.
・Obey all Japanese laws.

Application Guidelines and Required documents

STEP 1: Read the Application Guidelines
 
STEP 2: Download and print out the Application Form and fill it out in neat handwriting (please use block letters) or fill the form digitally (referring to the Chart Sheet codes).
 
STEP 3: Prepare all other necessary documentation (see Application Checklist below for further explanation)
 
Applications will be accepted from TODAY to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 13 March, 2026. Please follow the instructions given below for the applications.

Application Checklist

Document
(1) Typed or Handwritten Application Form referring to the Chart Sheet codes
(2) JET Programme Applicant Self-Report of Medical Conditions 
(3) Letters of Reference from Two Referees (in Japanese or English)
If you have not yet graduated, at least one referee must be affiliated with your university. The referee(s) must clearly state your expected date of graduation in the Letter(s) of Reference.
・If you have already graduated or are a working professional, you may request both Letters of References from individuals who can provide an objective assessment of you, such as your educational institution or from your current or previous employer.
4) Certified Academic Records ( Marksheets / Transcripts)
・Submit certified academic records covering all college/university courses.
・Scanned copies of original marksheets or transcripts must be attached. If transcripts are submitted, each page must be signed and stamped by the university.
・If original marksheets have not been issued, transcripts may be obtained from the Registrar’s Office of your college/university.
Include original marksheets or certified transcripts for all semesters, arranged in ascending chronological order. If you attended a different college or university as part of a study abroad program or placement, you must also submit the marksheets or certified transcripts issued by that institution
(5) Essay (Statement of Purpose)
 Typed, single-sided, double-spaced essay on an A4 paper (210mm x 297mm), not exceeding two pages. This page limit must be strictly observed.
(6) Certificate of Graduation        
  a) Applicants who are expected to graduate by July 2026 must submit a Certificate of Expected Date of Graduation (also known as a Bonafide Certificate). It must clearly state the duration of the course and confirm the expected month and year of graduation.
  b) Applicants who have already graduated must submit a scanned copy of the original Graduation Certificate/Degree for all higher education qualifications earned (e.g., BA and MA, BSc and MSc, PhD, etc.).
  c) If the original Graduation Certificate/Degree has not yet been issued, a signed and stamped provisional Graduation Certificate/Degree obtained from the Registrar’s Office of your college/university may be submitted instead.
(7) Certificate of Nationality
Please include a scanned copy of your passport. If your passport has not been issued or is expired at the time of application, you may instead submit a scanned copy of one of the following documents: Birth Certificate, Grade 10 Results, Aadhaar Card, Voter ID Card, or Driving Licence.
(8) Scanned copies of certificates for teaching or language proficiency qualifications (e.g., TEFL, TESL, JLPT, NAT) must be submitted only by applicants who already hold these certifications.
(9) If you answered “Yes” to either questions 1, 2a, 2b or 3 on the Self-Report of Medical Conditions, please also include a completed Statement of Physician Form.

(10) Criminal Record/Police Certificate
(*Only for applicants with a criminal record who answered “Yes” to the question 9 in the application form)
In the case the applicant is unable to obtain his/her criminal record by the time of application, a document proving that you have applied for the certificate will be accepted. In this instance, the criminal record itself must then be submitted by Friday, 29 May 2026.

STEP 4: Submit all documents to the JET Desk via email no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 13 March 2026. All required documents must be combined into a single PDF file in the numerical order (1–11) as listed in the Application Checklist, and scanned in A4 size only. Please note that the Embassy email server cannot receive emails larger than 10 MB. If your file exceeds this size, you are advised to compress or zip your attachment. Sending multiple PDFs or attachments is not allowed. Applications submitted by postal mail or courier will not be considered

Preparing an application for the JET Programme can take longer than expected, so applicants are strongly advised to start preparations well in advance of the deadline.
