2026 JET PROGRAMME RECEPTION

On July 24, a reception was held at the Ambassador's residence for participants of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET Programme).
The JET Program is an initiative implemented by the Japanese government and local municipalities, which invites young foreigners to work in local governments and other organizations, with the aim of enhancing foreign language education and promoting international exchange at the community level. Since its inception in 1987, it is the world's largest people-to-people exchange program with more than 80,000 participants from 80 countries.
The JET programme can mainly be divided into two categories, which are Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) and Coordinator for International Relations (CIR).
ALTs support Japanese English teachers in elementary, junior high, and high schools by assisting with English language instruction. Meanwhile, CIRs contribute to local government departments responsible for handling tasks such as translation, interpretation, and the planning and execution of international exchange events.

While the number of JET participants from India has been limited in the past, the recent progress in Japan-India relations has paved the way for a continuous dispatch of Indian participants especially as ALTs starting last year. This year, 22 ALTs and 4 CIRs have been dispatched to Japan, where they are expected to contribute to Japan-India relations across the country, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south.
ALTs and CIRs arrived in Japan on July 26, and August 2 respectively. These JETs will be assigned to their respective roles, and it is hoped that exchanges between the two countries at the grassroots level will deepen in various parts of Japan.

During the reception, Chargé d'Affaires Ariyoshi Takashi encouraged Indian youth aspiring to work and live in Japan to apply for the JET Programme. He expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders for their continued support in promoting the programme and noted that, as next year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and India, he hopes the JET Programme participants will further deepen the friendship between the two countries and serve as a bridge for future generations.
