My journey with the JET program isn’t as typical as most other JETs. I applied in 2007 with absolutely no knowledge of Japan apart from a few shoujo manga I’d discovered barely a year before. Those manga made me cry, and made me curious about this culture that could embed so much value in something as simple as comics. 

Fast forward almost 20 years and the ripple effect of the JET program continues. The opportunity to participate twice, first in Akita City, Akita from 2008-2013 and then in Kawanishi City, Hyogo from 2017-2019 has permanently shaped my outlook on life, friendship, and culture. It allowed me the joy of playing a small role in the lives of students and colleagues and gifted me a real sense of purpose. The unique culture of Japan has also taught me to value things more - like time, keeping your word, honest, hard work and being considerate of others. 

This program is so much more than just a job. It is a rare chance to be a part of and learn about the highly regarded work ethics of Japan, as well as to tangibly experience the rich blend of different cultures and ways of life.
