【Advanced Notice】The Handover Ceremony of the Project for the Provision of Eye Medical Equipment in Vrindavan
2025/6/3
The handover ceremony of “the Project for the Provision of Eye Medical Equipment in Vrindavan,” under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan, will be held on June 10, 2025, in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh.
The handover ceremony will be attended by Mr. Anil Kumar Bhatnagar, Director of the recipient organization of the grant “Naujhil Integrated Rural Project for Health and Development” and Ms. HOKUGO Kyoko, Minister of Economy and Development, and Mr. WATANABE Makoto, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan in India.
The GGP scheme was introduced in 1989 to address diverse basic human needs in developing countries. The Government of Japan has supported India’s grassroots projects in various fields through the scheme, such as the construction of schools and vocational training centers, the provision of medical equipment, and other forms of assistance.
This project, amounting to approximately 8.19 million yen, involves the provision of ophthalmic medical equipment. In India, an estimated 4.95 million people are visually impaired, and approximately 35 million have visual disorders, primarily due to cataracts and other eye diseases. The recipient organization operates an ophthalmic hospital in Vrindavan, providing medical consultations, diagnosis, and surgeries to underprivileged patients at nominal or no charges. However, the shortage of medical equipment has resulted in unfavorable situations, such as prolonged waiting times and patients having to seek treatment or
diagnosis at distant hospitals, which have caused worsening patients’ conditions in some cases.
Through this project, the provision of ophthalmic medical equipment will improve the quality of medical services and enable the hospital to deliver more appropriate eye care to the local community.
The Government of Japan hopes that this support will not only enhance the quality of life for people in the target area but also further strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Japan and India.
