- Ambassador Suzuki and a delegation of the Japanese community in Delhi visited the Parliament this morning (Tuesday, August 6) to observe the reference to dropping of atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and a minute of silence in the memory of the victims of the said bombings at Lok Sabha.
- At the chamber, Honorable Speaker Om Birla said as follows:
79 years ago, on 6 and 9 August 1945, the cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed with atom bombs respectively. Resultantly, thousands of people lost their lives, and many lakhs were either wounded or left handicapped for the rest of their lives. This incident introduced the devastation caused atomic bomb to humanity. Even after so many years of this incident, the residents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are exposed to the radiation caused by atomic bomb.
Today is the opportunity to commit ourselves again to disarm the world from weapons of mass destruction. This House collectively pledges to destroy atomic weapons and to spread world peace, harmony, and benevolence.
Now this House will observe silence to remember the people of Japan affected by the nuclear bombing. (End)
