2024/3/14
The handover ceremony of “the Project for Provision of Water Supply System and Sanitation Facility at Bellefonte Community College, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya” under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan will be held on March 19, 2024, in Shillong, Meghalaya.
The GGP scheme was introduced in 1989 to address diverse basic human needs in developing countries, and the Government of Japan has supported India’s grassroots projects in various fields through the scheme, such as construction of school buildings, vocational training centers and check dams, and provision of medical equipment.
The handover ceremony will be attended by Sr. Elizabeth George, President at the recipient organization of the grant “Mary Our Help Training Centre,” and Mr. KODERA Jiro, Counsellor at the Embassy of Japan in India.
The recipient organization established Bellefonte Community College in the East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya in 2010, providing free general education and vocational training to children and young people from underprivileged families. Currently, approximately 900 students are enrolled at the college.
However, the college faces urgent issues such as the lack of water storage tanks, which limit water usage to the morning only, and an insufficient number of toilets and handwashing facilities in comparison to the number of students.
This project, which amounts to approximately 8.32 million Japanese Yen, provides the college with water supply system such as water tanks and sanitation facilities such as toilets and hand washing stations, with an aim to improve students’ sanitary environment by ensuring sufficient water supply, discouraging them from defecating outdoors, and keeping their hands and fingers clean.
The Government of Japan hopes that this project under the GGP scheme will help in the enhancement of the quality of life and human security of the people in India and further foster friendship and cooperation between Japan and India.
