Inauguration of Chennai Metro Rail Project – Phase 1 Extension (Line 1: Washermanpet – Wimco Nagar 9.051km section), supported by Japanese ODA Loan

On 14th February, 2021, the Washermanpet – Wimco Nagar (9.051km) section of the Chennai Metro Rail Project with 9 stations (Phase 1 Extension) was inaugurated. This project has been supported by Japanese ODA Loan. The Flag Off Ceremony was conducted by Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. From Japanese side, Mr.TAGA Masayuki, Consul General of Japan in Chennai joined the ceremony. The AFC system developed and manufactured by Nippon Signal Co., Ltd. is used in this project.
Japan has been supporting the Chennai Metro Rail Project through Japanese ODA Loan since 2008, and, currently, is supporting its Phase 2 project (Line 3: 36km / 40 stations, Line 5: 16km / 18 stations).
