Grant Assistance Project signed in the amount of 8.7million Yen
2021/2/26
On Feb 26th, H.E. Mr. SUZUKI Satoshi, Ambassador of Japan to Bhutan, and H.E. Maj. Gen. Vetsop Namgyel, Ambassador of Bhutan to Japan, signed the Grant Contract (G/C) for Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) in New Delhi.
The amount of the project signed is around 8.7 million Yen. Details of the project are as follows:
Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP)
“The Project for Procurement of Transfer Bus for Women’s Shelter Home in Wangsisna, Thimphu”
Recipient Organization: RENEW
Total amount of the Grant: 8.7 million Yen
This project, the amount of which totals around 8.7 million Yen, will support the purchase of a bus for a women’s shelter home run by RENEW, the recipient organization of this project, and improve the access to hospital and vocational training center by those sheltered in their facility.
RENEW has been working on gender-based violence, by conducting awareness programs for prevention of domestic violence, giving protection or support to the victims, and running a vocational training center. RENEW has also been providing transfer bus services for marginalized women to go to the vocational training center, or for the victims to go to see a doctor. However, the bus currently being used has become too old and unreliable, and a new transfer bus is acutely needed in order to ensure the safety of passengers.
This project will enable the victims living at the shelter to visit the hospital safely, and the socially marginalized women in the project area to go to the vocational training center to acquire income generating skills, thereby promoting socio-economic independence of women in Bhutan. Furthermore, it is expected that this project will bring about a drastic change in the people’s awareness towards gender-based violence.
The Government of Japan hopes that this new grant project will help to reinforce the quality of living standards and human security of the people in Bhutan, by improving social and economic empowerment of the people, and further strengthen the friendship and cooperation between Japan and Bhutan.
