Four Grant Assistance Projects to be signed in the amount of 949.6 million Yen

The signing ceremony of documents for four grant assistance projects toward Bhutan under Japan’s ODA scheme, namely, the Exchange of Notes (E/Ns) for “The Project for Improvement of Farm Machinery for Hiring Service of Tillage (Phase 2)” and “The Project for Improving Solid Waste Management”, as well as Grant Contracts (G/Cs) for “The Project for Provision of Digital Fabrication Equipment – Fabricating Bhutan” and “The Project for Provision of Health Bus to Prevent NCDs and Kidney Disease in Rural Areas”, will be held on 9th March 2020, at the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi.

In this ceremony, the E/Ns and G/Cs pertaining to the above-mentioned projects will be signed between H.E. Mr. Satoshi Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan to Bhutan, and H.E. Maj. Gen. Vetsop Namgyel, Ambassador of Bhutan to Japan.

The total amount of the four projects is around 949.6 million Yen. Details of each project are as follows:
 
1. Grant Aid

(1) “The Project for Improvement of Farm Machinery for Hiring Services of Tillage (Phase 2)” (Counterpart: Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Agriculture Machinery Centre and Farm Machinery Corporation Limited)

This project, the amount of which totals 427 million Yen, will provide farm machinery all over Bhutan and contribute to reinforcing the food security in Bhutan.
 
(2) “The Project for Improving Solid Waste Management” (Counterpart: Gross National Happiness Commission)

This project, the amount of which totals 509 million Yen, will provide equipment of waste management to four cities, namely, Thimphu, Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar, leading to improvement of living standards of these four cities.

2. Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP)
 
(1) “The Project for Provision of Digital Fabrication Equipment – Fabricating Bhutan” (Recipient Organization: Fablab, Bhutan)

This project, the amount of which totals around 5.3 million Yen, will support the purchase of five equipment for fabrication laboratory, and contribute to the expansion of employment opportunities for the youth, as well as sustainable economic development in Bhutan.
  
(2) “The Project for Provision of Health Bus to Prevent NCDs and Kidney Disease in Rural Areas” (Bhutan Kidney Foundation)

This project, the amount of which totals around 8.3 million Yen, will support the purchase of a medical bus, and enable people in the remote village to have regular medical check-ups to prevent Non-Communicable Diseases.
  
The Government of Japan hopes that these four new grant projects will help to reinforce the quality of living standards of the people in Bhutan, by improving their food security, urban environment system, employment opportunities for youths, and medical environment, and further strengthen the friendship and cooperation, as well as expand the people-to-people exchanges, between Japan and Bhutan.
