【Advance Notice】The Handover Ceremony of The Project for the Transportation Facilitation for Eliminating Violence against Children in Remote Areas in Bhutan

2026/2/26
The handover ceremony of “The Project for the Transportation Facilitation for Eliminating Violence against Children in Remote Areas in Bhutan” under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan will be held on March 2, 2026, in Thimphu, Bhutan.

The handover ceremony will be attended by Mr.Bishal Rai, Chairperson of the Nazhoen Lamtoen, the recipient organization, and Mr. OTSUKI Kei, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan in Bhutan.

The GGP is a grant aid scheme under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), introduced in 1989 to support relatively small-scale projects that address the needs of local communities. In Bhutan, the scheme has supported a wide range of projects tailored to local needs, including the construction of bridges and student dormitories, the rehabilitation of irrigation channels, and the provision of vehicles such as fire engines.

This project, amounting to approximately 5.5 million Japanese yen, provides one vehicle. In Bhutan, responding to domestic violence and child abuse has become one of the social challenges, particularly against the backdrop of rising unemployment. The need for support for women and children is especially significant in rural areas.

Nazhoen, the recipient organization of the grant, has been implementing child protection and livelihood support activities in seven districts, with its base in Thimphu. However, a shortage of vehicles for outreach activities has limited its support operations.

Through the provision of a new vehicle, the project aims to enable the regular delivery of relief supplies to rural areas, ensure prompt field visits, and further strengthen the child protection system.

The Government of Japan also hopes that this support will further strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Bhutan and Japan.
