2024/3/27

We are delighted to announce that the handover ceremony of ‘The Project for Reusing Secondhand Fire Engines in Thimphu, Sarpang, Haa, and Samtse’ under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme was held on March 27, 2024, at Thimphu, Bhutan.

Ms. HOKUGO Kyoko, Minister (Economic and Development), Embassy of Japan in India, and Major General Chimi Dorji, Chief of Police, Fire and Rescue Service Division, Royal Bhutan Police, the recipient organization of the grant, attended the ceremony.

This project, which amounts to approximately 21.18 million Japanese Yen, provides four secondhand fire engines and conducts a technical assistance program by Japan Firefighters Association, enabling them to address the challenges posed by aging fire engines and strengthen disaster prevention and rescue capabilities.

The GGP scheme was introduced in 1989 to address the diverse basic human needs of developing countries, and the Government of Japan has supported Bhutan’s grassroots projects in various fields through the scheme, such as rehabilitation of irrigation canals and provision of vehicles for different purposes.

The Government of Japan hopes that this project will not only contribute to ensuring the safety and security of people of each region and strengthening firefighting capabilities in Bhutan but also serve as a catalyst for enhancing the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Japan and Bhutan.
