The Japan Foundation’s activities include promotion of theatrical exchanges between South and West Asian countries. The present initiative towards this direction has been a theatrical collaboration of India, Iran, Uzbekistan and Japan. Uzbekistan’s Ovlyakuli Khodjakuli is to work with Medea, India’s Abhilash Pillai on Clytemnestra from the Trojan Women; and Iran’s Mohammad Aghebati on Jocasta from Oedipus Rex. The set designer Daisuke Nakayama of Japan played a crucial role in working with the three directors to visually develop their images of the piece. It is premiered at the 9th Bharat Rang Mahotsav (National Theatre Festival) of National School of Drama. |

Ku Na’uka was founded in 1990
by Satoshi Miyagi. The primary objective of this
theatre company is to focus as to how “two actors
role can be combined into one “:-one does the story
telling while the other moves around the stage with
the story like a mime. The suppressed energies of
both the actors thus create a tempo beyond reality.
This is the spirit underlined in Ku Na’uka Theatre
Company’s motive. Ku Na’uka presented its masterpiece
“Medea”.

The plays will be presented by the Japanese students of Osaka University of Foreign Studies and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. Students of these Universities are visiting India from time to time to perform Indian plays and also Japanese plays in Hindi/Urdu.
Barefoot Gen is based on a manga (comic story) written by Keiji Nakazawa. GEN-a 10-year old boy loses his father and sister when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Though his mother was spared, she delivers a girl prematurely. The city looks like a wasteland, it was very difficult to find enough to eat. Gen’s little sister falls ill and in spite of his best efforts she dies. However, Gen perseveres and takes care of those who were worse off than him. Then one day he notices that things are growing once again on the soil of Hiroshima and he determines to live.
The plays were recently staged in Pakistan, which were well received by all sections of the audience.
