The first Japanese ODA loan was disbursed in the wake of then Prime Minister Nehru’s historic visit to Japan in 1957. This was the first case of Japanese ODA loans ever extended to a foreign country. Since then, bilateral relations between Japan and India have expanded manifold, and today India is the largest Japanese ODA loan partner in the world. In 2007, the amount of Japanese ODA loans to India has marked annual record of 225,130 million Yen (approximately $2,085 million) for the first time, corresponding to the ever-increasing demand in India for infrastructure, transport, energy, water supply, sewage system, or irrigation, to name a few.
