Press Release No.14
NEW DELHI: July 2, 2013
1. On July 2, the Government of Japan announced an emergency grant aid of 2 hundred thousand US dollars (approximately 16 million and 4 hundred thousand Japanese yen) through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support the distribution of relief items and other relief operations to help the floods victims in India.
2. Torrential monsoon rains continued since June 16 and caused flooding in the state of Uttarakhand and other states in northern India. On June 19, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh committed relief funds worth 10 billion Indian rupees (approximately 16 billion Japanese yen) for the floods victims. It was reported on June 26 that the flooding has claimed 822 lives and made approximately 90 thousand people homeless.
3. Responding to the IFRC’s call for support, as well as in light of Japan’s friendly cooperative relations with India based on the Japan-India Global and Strategic Partnership, and the fact that Japan is the largest aid donor to India and that India extended generous support to the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the Government of Japan decided to provide this emergency aid as part of humanitarian assistance to those affected by the flooding. In addition to this emergency aid, the Government of Japan will also assist India’s efforts to achieve middle- and long-term reconstruction of the Uttarakhand state.
