  Government Of Japan Extends US$76,311 Grant Assistance

         1. The Embassy of Japan in India, under its scheme ‘Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects’, today decided to extend grant assistance totalling US$76,311 (approximately equivalent to Rs.34 lacs) to one Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to support an education project undertaken by it. The following NGO and project is receiving the Grant:  

     Utthan – Center for Sustainable Development and Poverty Alleviation was established with the objective of promoting sustainable development for weaker sections of society. In the target area of Allahabad district in Uttar Pradesh, the organization planned a project for establishing a building of primary school for children, most of whom are from Scheduled Castes and other backward classes, being illiterate and living below the poverty line.

The Embassy of Japan decided to give a grant assistance of US$76,311 for the project, so that the organization will be able to provide primary education to around 500 children annually and help improving the standard of living of the community people in the future.

2. The Signing Ceremony to formalize the arrangements is scheduled to take place at 1600 hrs. on Thursday, 2nd March 2006, at the Embassy of Japan, between Ambassador Yasukuni Enoki and the representative of the above NGO.

3. The scheme of "Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects" was introduced by the Government of Japan in 1989, to provide timely assistance directly to the activities of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) promoting welfare of the people in developing countries. Projects eligible for the grant assistance include such fields as primary healthcare, primary education, care of the handicapped people, poverty alleviation, enhancing status of women, public welfare, environment protection, etc. The Embassy of Japan and the Consulates-General of Japan in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai are in charge of this scheme in their respective regions.
