Government of Japan extends ¥ 46 million Grant Assistance to Bhutan for the Project for the Rehabilitation of Taklai Irrigation System in Sarpang District


The Government of Japan agreed today to extend a grant assistance of 46 million yen (approximately 0.5 million US dollars) to the Royal Government of Bhutan for “the Project for the Rehabilitation of Taklai Irrigation System in Sarpang District”. The Exchange of Notes to formalize the extension of the grant was conducted at the Embassy of Japan, New Delhi. The Notes were signed and exchanged between H.E. Mr. Takeshi Yagi, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Bhutan, and H.E. Mr. Vetsop Namgyel, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bhutan to Japan.

The Government of Japan has been supporting the construction of agricultural infrastructure in the Kingdom of Bhutan under several projects. This project will support the rehabilitation of Taklai Irrigation System in Sarpang District. Taklai area has a great potential to expand the agricultural production in the southern region of Bhutan.

The Government of Japan hopes that this grant assistance would help the sustainability of agriculture in Bhutan, and also contribute to further strengthening of the relationship between the two countries.
