IMPORTANT EMBASSY EVENTS HELD IN

GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN EXTENDS US$ 89,208 GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR TWO GRASSROOTS PROJECTS

    The Embassy of Japan in India, under its scheme ‘Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects’, formalized the agreement on 27th July, 2007 to extend grant assistance totaling US$ 89,208 (approximately equivalent to Rs.36 lacs) to two Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to support rehabilitation care and vocational training projects undertaken by them. The following NGOs and projects received the Grants:

    Anchal Charitable Trust received a sum of US$ 26,034 for purchasing a disabled-friendly school bus in order to provide safe commute for the education and rehabilitation of challenged children in slum areas in Delhi.

    Foundation for Arts received a sum of US$ 63,174 for a project to install new machines in their training centre to enable upgraded vocational training to women and artisans in Khurja, Uttar Pradesh, for the sake of improving both their livelihood and traditional arts conservation.

JAPAN EXTENDS RS.1,345 CRORE SOFT LOAN PACKAGE TO INDIA UNDER THE ACCELERATED DOUBLE TRACKED PROCESS

    The Government of Japan agreed to extend a package of Official Development Assistance to India, in the form of soft loans totaling 39,555 million yen (approximately Rs.1,345 crore). The Exchange of Notes to formalize the agreement to this effect were concluded at a ceremony held on 14 August 2007 in the Ministry of Finance in New Delhi, between H.E. Mr. Yasukuni Enoki, then Ambassador of Japan to India, and Mr. Kumar Sanjay Krishna, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Government of India on behalf of their respective Governments. The two projects that will receive soft loan assistance under this package through the Japan Bank for International Development (JBIC) are: the Maharashtra Transmission System Project worth 16,749 million yen and the Goa Water Supply and Sewerage Project worth 22,806 million yen.

JAPAN SUPPORTS POLIO ERADICATION CAMPAIGN IN INDIA - RS.7 CRORE GRANT TO UNICEF

    The Government of Japan agreed to extend to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) a grant assistance of Rs.7 crore (212 million yen) for the Intensified Pulse Polio Immunization (IPPI) campaign to eradicate poliomyelitis from India. Notes to this effect were signed and exchanged between H.E. Mr. Yasukuni Enoki, then Ambassador of Japan to India, and Mr. Cecilio Adorna, Representative, UNICEF India country office, at a ceremony held in the Embassy of Japan on August 31, 2007. The grant will be used for the purchase of 7.5 lakh vials of oral polio vaccine for use in the target area of north-eastern states and West Bengal.

    Japan has been supporting the Polio Eradication Campaign in India since 1996 and the cumulative amount of assistance until 2007 has reached Rs.250 crore (7.6 billion yen).

GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN EXTENDS US$ 169,257 GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR TWO GRASSROOTS PROJECTS

    The Embassy of Japan in India, under its scheme ‘Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects’, decided to extend grant assistance totaling US$ 169,257 (approximately equivalent to Rs.67 lacs) to two Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to support their projects for upgrading medical service for slums and constructing a centre for street children. The Signing Ceremony to formalize the arrangements took place on 28th September 2007 at the Embassy of Japan, between Mr. Ryoichi Horie, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission, and the representatives of the following NGOs:

    ASHA Community Health and Development Society received a sum of US$ 85,474 for the project to install new equipments at its polyclinic to provide upgraded medical service to underprivileged people and patients from 43 slums in Southern Delhi

    Don Bosco-Ashalayam received the sum of US$ 83,783 for the project to set up a new centre in Jajjar, Haryana, for providing shelter, recreation, counselling, education and vocational training to street children and underprivileged youth from slums in Delhi.

GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN EXTENDS US$ 84,833 GRANT ASSISTANCE TO NETWORK OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP and ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
