Prof. Nara was born in 1929 and obtained his Masters Degree in Humanities from Tokyo University in 1956, followed by a Doctorate in Literature in 1973, majoring in Socio-cultural History of Buddhism and Indian Religions. In his long academic career, he has taught at the Komazawa University, Sanskrit College, Calcutta, and Vishva Bharati University, besides the Universities of Tokyo, Kyoto, Hokkaido, Shinshu, Kanazawa, and others. He has also written extensively on Buddhist studies, having published 32 books in all.
In his lecture, he will be talking about how Indian narrative literature was introduced to Japan.
