Japan and India share a broad history of friendship and interaction between our two peoples in the modern period. Especially, the close ties between Indian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and noted Japanese philosopher and cultural ideologue Tenshin Okakura in the early 20th century are well documented. Their perception on the concept of Asia, nationalism and civilization are still relevant in today’s times.

Prof. Azuma was born in 1931, and obtained his Masters degree in Indian Philosophy from the University of Tokyo in 1959. Thereafter, he did his D.Lit. (Honoris Causa) on Tagore Studies, from the Rabindra-Bharati University, Calcutta, in 1986. Besides his long teaching career in Japan, he also taught at the Visva Bharati University as Reader and Head of the Department of Japanese Studies, from 1967 to 1971.

Prof. Azuma will provide an insight into the special relationship between Rabindranath Tagore and Tenshin Okakura, and its influence on each other’s life and work.
