Okinawa Prefecture, located at the most southern-west region of Japan was once called the Kingdom of Ryukyu. The Kingdom once established a wealthy and prosperous epoch by developing transit trade relations with Japan, China, and many South Asian countries. The Kingdom, incorporating a rich variety of cultures from many other countries, promoted own aesthetics and sensibility, and established a glorious assimilated royal culture that can be proud of its world heritage. The Ryukyu dances represent the zenith of the culture.
For this occasion, we will introduce the classical or court dances, evolved for entertaining Envoys from Emperor of China, popular dances called zo odori, reflecting the daily lives and feelings of the common people, and some more folk dances, preserved and inherited in many areas encompassing breath of the local aroma. The leading dancers on the first line will perform the dazzling dances.
The National Theatre Okinawa was opened in Urasoe City, Okinawa in January 2004 for the preservation and promotion of Okinawa’s traditional performing arts, including a nationally important intangible cultural asset, "Kumiodori (Theatrical Performances)".
