The University of Tokyo Opens India Office in Bangalore

On February 27, 2012, The University of Tokyo announced the opening of its India office in Bangalore, at an event organized to engage with students, academics, businesses and delegates, on education opportunities and offerings in Japan. Mr. N. R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman Emeritus - Infosys Ltd., Mr. Kanji Fujiki, Deputy Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, and Mr. Hajime Hayashi, Charge d’ Affaires Ad Interim – Embassy of Japan in India, attended the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Akihiko Tanaka, Vice President, The University of Tokyo, said, “The University of Tokyo India Office has been established to create awareness on education opportunities in Japan among Indian students, and encourage them to apply to study in Japan. We have many premier education institutions in Japan and are focused on attracting Indian students to look at Japan as an education destination. India is one of the most important countries for us in terms of academic partnership and we hope to increase the number of Indian students studying in Japan.”

The University of Tokyo India Office is the second “Overseas Office for Shared Utilization by Universities” to open in India under the “Global 30” Project, following the Ritsumeikan India Office in New Delhi established in November 2010. These two offices provide comprehensive information on Japanese universities, including enrolment seminars and entrance examinations.

The “Global 30” project has been launched by the Japanese Government with the aim of increasing the number of international students in Japan to 300,000 by the year 2020. Under this initiative, 13 core universities (Tohoku University, University of Tsukuba, The University of Tokyo, Nagoya University, Kyoto University, Osaka University, Kyushu University, Keio University, Sophia University, Meiji University, Waseda University, Doshisha University and Ritsumeikan University) have been identified, which offer programs in English at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
