2017/7/31
The inauguration ceremony of the ‘Project for the Construction of a Vocational Training Center in Wangsisna, Thimphu, for the Empowerment of Economically and Socially Vulnerable Women’, under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP), will be held on 6th August 2017, in Thimphu, Bhutan.
The ceremony will be attended by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck, Founder, RENEW, the recipient organization of this grant, and relevant officials of the Royal Government of Bhutan, as well as Mr. Kenji Hiramatsu, Ambassador of Japan to Bhutan.
The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project scheme was established in 1989 to meet the diverse basic human needs in developing countries. The Government of Japan has supported Bhutan in projects, such as, construction of bridges, as well as provision of fire engines and compactor trucks.
This project, with a funding assistance amounting to 60 Lakh Ngultrum, aims to construct a Vocational Training Center for women. These women are survivors of Domestic Violence (DV), Sexual and Gender based Violence (SGBV), and are residing at the shelter home run by RENEW in Wangsisna, Thimphu.
The Government of Japan hopes that the vocational training center, to be constructed through this project, will contribute to facilitating economic self-reliance and empowerment, by providing the training of stitching and tailoring skills to women. Through the GGP Scheme, the Government of Japan looks forward to further developing the relations of friendship and cooperation between Japan and Bhutan.
