3rd Indo-Japan Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction

On 18 March 2019, the 3rd Indo-Japan Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction was held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, organised by Cabinet Office, the Government of Japan, and Ministry of Home Affairs, the Government of India.

The Government of Japan and the Government of India has signed Memorandum of Cooperation aiming to develop cooperation between both countries in the field of disaster risk reduction and to promote relationship between both countries, on the occasion of Prime Minister Abe’s visit to India in 2017. This Workshop has been held in order to exchange information on policy and measures on disaster risk reduction, and to enhance cooperation between Japan and India, and this is the 3rd meeting; following the 1st meeting held in March, 2018, in New Delhi; and 2nd meeting held in October, 2018, in Tokyo.

From Japanese side, Ambassador Hiramatsu, as well as a lot of delegates from governments, research institutions and private companies, led by Mr. Nakamura, Vice Minister, Cabinet Office participated. From Indian side, a lot of participants joined from governments, research institutes, FICCI and private companies, headed by Dr. P.K. Mishra, Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister.

Ambassador Hiramatsu, in his address at the opening session, appreciated that the workshop has been held once every six months; reiterated the significance of three themes set for this workshop as Collaboration among Research Institutes, among Cities and among Private Companies, from point of view that disaster risk reduction should involve various stakeholders; and express Japan’s continuous support to India’s challenges towards disaster risk reduction, in every possible way.

In three themes sessions, both sides shared and exchanged their experiences, knowledges and challenges on disaster risk reduction. Both sides also discussed measures towards future cooperation. Especially, in the session of Collaboration among Private Companies, a business matching event was held between private companies of both sides, where the participants actively exchanged information on Japanese products and services contributing to disaster risk reduction.

At the closing session, Ms. Mami Mizutori, Sprecial Representative of UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNISDR (United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction), was invited. She expressed, in her special comments, her appreciation on the cooperation between Japan and India on disaster risk reduction, and her hope further leadership of both Japan and India towards global challenges on disaster risk reduction.
