Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of The Nippon Foundation, receives The Gandhi Peace Prize 2018

On January 16, the Government of India announced that Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of the Nippon Foundation and WHO Goodwill Ambassador, was selected as a recipient of the "Gandhi Peace Prize" for 2018, for his contribution to leprosy eradication in India and across the world. This is the first time for a Japanese national to win this prize.
 
* The Gandhi Peace Prize is a prestigious award that the Indian Government founded in 1995 in commemoration of 125th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi chaired the jury for selection of the winners.
 
Mr. Sasakawa has been working for elimination of leprosy for more than 40 years. In India, which is the world's most leprosy-afflicted country, he frequently visits the colonies of leprosy patients and recovered people who have been suffering from severe discrimination, and extends support to improve their lives and retain their dignity.
