Conferral of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon upon Mr. Tarun Das

On 29th April 2018 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2018 Spring Imperial Decorations. Mr. Tarun Das is among this year’s foreign recipients, and, in recognition of his contributions towards strengthening relations between Japan and India and promoting mutual understanding between the two countries, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.

SUMMARY OF MR. DAS’ CONTRIBUTIONS
Mr. Tarun Das worked as Chief Executive of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) from 1974 to 2004, and as Chief Mentor of CII from 2004 to 2009, where he contributed to strengthening Japan-India economic relationship. Furthermore, under his strong leadership, CII, in cooperation with Sasakawa Peace Foundation, started sending Indian parliamentarians to Japan, with the aim of enhancing mutual understanding and interaction between Japan and India at the high level. This initiative is now taken forward by The Nippon Foundation and Ananta Aspen Centre, of which he is the Founding Trustee.
Since assuming his position as Member, Board of Trustees, for Sasakawa-India Leprosy Foundation, Mr. Das has been vigorously working on eliminating discrimination towards people affected by leprosy and their families vis-à–vis creating economic integration. Currently serving as Chairman of the Foundation, he continues to support those who are affected by the disease.
Mr. Das has also played a major role in promoting cooperation among the countries in the Indo-Pacific region, by co-chairing the U.S.-Japan-India Track Two Strategic Dialogue in 2006, as well as co-chairing the Japan-India Strategic Dialogue in 2013. He has actively advocated the importance of the Japan-India, Japan-India-U.S. relations, enhanced people-to-people exchanges between the countries, and made various policy proposals to the governments on Japan-India relations.
Through such activities, Mr. Das has made significant contribution towards strengthening the Japan-India relationship as well as to cultivating public understanding of Japan in India.
