Inauguration of the section of Delhi Metro Magenta Line between Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir supported by the Government of Japan

2017/12/26
On 25th December, 2017, the Delhi Metro Rail Project (Phase 3), the section of Magenta Line between Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir (13.5 km) and 9 stations was inaugurated, demonstrating Japan’s active support for Delhi Metro with Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans as well as Japanese railway technologies. This newly inaugurated section has been the first section to adopt the driverless train operation system; “the Unattended Train Operation (UTO) mode” based on the new signaling technology, “Communication-Based Train Control System (CBTC)” designed by Nippon Signal Co.,Ltd.

Japan is proud to have played a key role in this important project since its very beginning. The Government of Japan is supporting the construction of about 116 km section out of a total 159 km of Delhi Metro Phase 3, through the financing by Japan’s Official Development Assistance(ODA) loan amounting to JPY 276.8 billion. Japan is the only country to support Delhi Metro Phase 3 and Japan’s ODA loan covers 48.57% of the total funding of Delhi Metro Phase 3.

The inauguration of this section between Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir in Delhi Metro Magenta Line, supported by Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans and Japanese technologies, such as “the Unattended Train Operation (UTO) mode” based on “Communication-Based Train Control System (CBTC)” designed by Nippon Signal Co., will not only improve the comfort of commuters in the Delhi National Capital Region, but also reduces traffic jams and air pollution by enabling more commuters to avail the Metro.
