Roundtable Discussion on Railway Safety and Conventional Railways with Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Mr. Piyush Goyal - Strengthening Japan-India Cooperation on Railway Safety and Conventional Railways -

On 31 October, railway experts and officials of Japan and India interacted over an intense roundtable discussion on railway safety and railways technologies, at Rail Bhawan. Ambassador Hiramatsu led the Japanese delegation comprising of representatives from 25 companies, organizations and research institutions. High-ranking Indian railway officials, headed by Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Mr. Piyush Goyal, along with Chairman of Railway Board, Mr. Ashwani Lohani, keenly listened to Japan’s presentations on railway safety management methodology as well as engineering expertise. Participants on both sides agreed to take the discussion forward towards improved railway safety and conventional railway cooperation.
At the beginning of the meeting, Hon’ble Minister Goyal stated that Indian Railways need to absorb the qualities of precision and efficiency from Japanese railway safety management and Japanese engineering technologies. Chairman of Railway Board, Mr. Lohani, also stated that Indian Railways need to implement a paradigm shift through Japanese efficiency, engineering technologies and work culture. Ambassador Hiramatsu expressed the views that Japan is not only supporting High Speed Railway and DFC, but also intends to actively support railway safety and improvement of railway services through Japanese railway safety management and engineering expertise, and he also conveyed his wishes to make result-oriented efforts in cooperation with Hon’ble Minister Goyal.
At the following disucssions, the team of Japanese railway safety experts consisting of experts of track, rolling stock, railway safety management , and accident investigation, participated in the roundtable, as well as 16 companies in the field of track, steel, rolling stock, signaling and telecom, catenary wire, station development, modal shift to rail transportation, and security system, made presentations on their engineering and technological expertise, and had a lively discussion with Hon’ble Minister Goyal and Mr. Lohani, as well as high-ranking Indian railway officials.
On 1 November, following the roundtable with Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Mr. Goyal, and Chairman of Railway Board, Mr. Lohani, Japanese railway safety experts held the Railway Safety Seminar for Indian Railway officials, at Rail Bhawan, dealing with technical aspects in railway safety. This railway safety expert team examined the current status of railway safety in India and India’s needs for capacity development for railway safety, for consideration of further cooperation by the Government of Japan.
The Government of Japan hopes that these candid discussions on railway safety and services will enhance the level of cooperation on railway safety between Japan and India, and the Government of Japan will continue to make active contributions to the improvement of railway safety and services in India.
