The Government of Japan officially announced that it would honour Dr. Manmohan Singh, the founder, former President and a distinguished member of the JICA Alumni Association of India (JAAI), with the Order
of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the furtherance of friendly relations between Japan and India. The decoration is conferred upon Dr. Singh by His Majesty Akihito the Emperor of Japan.
H.E. Mr. Yasukuni Enoki, Ambassador of Japan, will host a ceremony at the Ambassador’s Residence, Embassy of Japan, on Friday, May 11, 2007 for the presentation of the decoration.
Dr. Singh after completing his M.B.B.S., from the King George College, Lucknow, received training in tuberculosis control for six months under a programme run by OTCA, a former organization of JICA.
Dr. Singh worked in various capacities in Delhi hospitals and has contributed a lot to the control of tuberculosis. For his meritorious services, Dr Singh has been conferred a Life Time Achievement Award in 2001 by Bihar State, in 2003 by the Delhi Government and in 2006 by NAPCON.
As a founding member of the JAAI, Dr. Singh has made invaluable contribution to the activities of JICA and organized many cultural programmes, which helped the people of the two countries to understand each other better.
